Are we allowed to be creative?

Are we allowed to be creative? Better yet, do we allowed ourselves to be creative?

Before reading on, do watch the creative works of 'meiwa denki 明和電機' They are a design company that deals with interactive design merged with engineering. Their current president, Nobumichi Tosa, had to be the most eccentric person i ever saw. They dared to dream, and put art before commerce.

Upon recieving an assignment, the first ideas that comes to your mind is often wacky and technically 'nonsense', but thats the sheer brilliance of it, its at the raw stage where you don't spend much time thinking about how realistic it is. However, reality will soon seep in and forces your to change to a more 'safe' concept. Now, why do we do that?

  • For students like us, it has to be the grades. Every concept must go through the tutors. If they deemed it 'unsuitable', most likely they will suggest their own twist to it or even ask you to drop the concept. Now, who are they to say what's right? This kills creativity.

  • How many of you hate briefs? briefs means creative roadblocks. It strangles your mind and forces you to come out with something that is not you. Briefs are meant for designers, who work for clients, bringing in a steady income. But how many of you are daring enough to be an artist? one who work for himself and do the unexpected? Are you a designer or an artist?

Do we, in this society where a paper is everything, have a chance to be creative? To be abnormal, unexpected and break free of all barriers?

Students, experienced designers/artists, do share your thoughts on this..:)

nice perspective u have there.
but remember u still have to eat, to be what you want to be. the worst is being too stubborn till u have no money to even support your artistic dreams.

the fact is, designers are always safe. so i always propose as many ideas i can. the crazy ones and even the safe ones. doing this stage by stage gives me a better understanding how i can conceptualise to the brief, and do the delivery, my way.

at the end of the day, i still feel satisfied and not unjustified.

i guess as u go along u will have a better understanding of this. if u can see antz work for example, i saw him on your list : ) briefs do not mean creative blocks, they are creative challenges to me. how daring are u going to be on that? how can your work change the perception of design to a client? that all depends on concept, and most imptly, delivery.

im glad u want to venture further than being a commercial designer. ups for that. believe!

eventually it is all up to you whether you can be creative or not. there are many designers who think out of the box, and the ones with the crazy brilliant ideas are usually those who dare to go with their ideas.

i don't buy the student and grades thing. when you believe in your idea enough to propose it, and if your idea is good enough, i think the lecturers will not ask you to drop your concept. besides, even if they did ask you to drop it, it is really up to you to decide if go through with it - they cannot force you to drop your own ideas.

regarding briefs being creative roadblocks, if one cannot think within the box, then he/she just isn't creative enough. that's all.

the art vs. design thing is overhyped btw.

tks guys for sharing...:)

well, there's always a 2 side to every argument, all depends on how we think...this will forever be a debate among people...

The truth is people no longer think of a designer/artist as a person who illstrates/draw/paint...additional skills like programming/scripting/motion graphic is beneficial and gives the person an edge over the other applicant...the more skills you are good at, the greater are your chances...but then again, be great and devoted to one thing or be good at several?

ok, sorry, out of topic...leave that to the next time then..haha..

ps: thanks manda and ag for spending some time thinking bout this...:) really appriciate it...btw, if you wanna know, this was actually an accidental debate in interactive design class..
